A ride down ‘memory line’ for HD Deve Gowda

New Delhi/Srinagar: Twenty-eight years since he became Prime Minister of India, HD Deve Gowda recently visited the valley state of Kashmir and personally witnessed the Uri hydropower plant in the remotest part of the country. The former prime minister, who arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday, was visiting the valley state for the first time after 28 years.  Travelling by train from Srinagar to Baramulla on Thursday morning, he recalled that he had sanctioned this railway line when he was the head of state.

He moved from Baramulla to Uri, and visited the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Private Limited plant there.  This 480 MW power plant was also inaugurated when Deve Gowda was Prime Minister.  This plant is located on the banks of the Jhelum in Uri, very close to the Line of Control (LOC) between India and Pakistan. Mr. Gowda, who walked across the power plant, reminisced his days in Delhi and interacted with the staff and officers of the unit on the occasion.
