Hassan: “Mathematics is difficult for some students, but for others it is a very interesting and exciting subject,” Dr. Shankar, Professor of Mathematics at National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, has said.
Speaking at a programme organised at Navkis College of Engineering in the city to mark the birth anniversary of genius mathematician Ramanujan, he said that from daily calculations to making financial decisions, mathematics plays a crucial role in everyday life and its importance in education cannot be overstated.
“For children, a solid foundation in Mathematics is essential for their academic success and careers. We will explore the importance of Mathematics for children and why it should be a top priority in their learning journey,” he said.
Dean of the college, Shripad Markande, said that the importance of Mathematics for children is often considered a fundamental necessity. A solid understanding of Mathematical concepts at an early age is crucial for success in advanced courses in later years.
“Children may face difficulties in basic concepts, but they can also learn Mathematics by solving one problem after another every day,” he added.
College Principal Dr. M Gopal Rao said that the most valuable skill that Mathematics education imparts was problem-solving. Mathematical problems require students to develop cognitive strategies to analyze situations, identify patterns and find solutions. These problem-solving skills are taught by Mathematics. And they are important for success in various aspects of life, including work and relationships,” he believed.
Dr. Raghavendra R, Head of the Department of Mathematics at Navkis College of Engineering, said that being successful in Mathematics can boost one’s confidence.
“As you solve problems and master Mathematical concepts, you gain a sense of achievement. This confidence can spread to other areas of academic and personal life,” he said, making students more resilient and ready to tackle challenges.
The programme was attended by Dr. Suma and Dr. Naveen, and students of the college.
