Hassan: Students staged a protest at Hassan University headquarters, Hemgangotri, on Wednesday, opposing the state government’s intended move to cancel the recognition of nine universities in the state, including Hassan University.
Leaders of various organizations participated in this struggle and strongly condemned the government’s move.
The government’s move to cancel the recognition of Hassan University, which began in 2023, and merge it with the University of Mysore is an anti-education, anti-student and anti-people move, they said.
Universities make an important contribution to the comprehensive progress of their respective regions by studying the culture, agriculture and lifestyle of the people of their respective geographical areas. Hassan University has just started functioning.
There are 22 government and 20 private colleges, two autonomous degree colleges, two university centers, a total of 54 degree colleges, 16 postgraduate colleges, a total of 70 colleges under the jurisdiction of this university centre. Around 20,000 students are studying in all these colleges.
Even though all these colleges are under the jurisdiction of this university, the government has not provided any administrative facilities.
Apart from appointing a vice-chancellor and a district in charge minister, it has not provided any more grants, appointed permanent teaching and non-teaching staff as required, and merged the university without
providing any minimum basic facilities including the construction of additional buildings.
The protesting organizations felt that the state government headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was acting in an extremely irresponsible manner.
They warned that the struggle to protect the culture of education will be intensified to save Hassan University.
