Hassan: “Modern thinking is not just about the clothes we wear, but entails viewing everyone as an equal,” Deputy Commissioner C. Sathyabhama has said.
Speaking at an International Women’s Day programme organized at the Malnad College of Engineering (MCE) in the city on Saturday, she said modernity was related primarily to our mindset.
“There are unwritten rules in society about what women should and should not do. There is a need to change the saying which credits a woman for a man’s success, to the reality that there is a man behind every successful woman as well,” she said.
“Women these days are working in all fields as equals to men. They are competing with men in the marketplace. Work needs to be done to make boys aware of how to behave with girls in public places. Boys are not being educated on how to behave with girls. Women have been overcoming many challenges since the medieval era. The role of women in building society is important. The domestic violence faced by women was depicted in the movies of the 70s and 80s. They were a reflection of the times,” she said.
The DC also said that despite many problems such as Sati and dowry harassment, women have come to the forefront in all facets of life.
Alur Taluk Health Officer Dr. Nisar Fatima spoke on the occasion and said that if women got both health and education, society and home would be healthy and happy.
“I am able to serve as a doctor only with the cooperation of my family. Every family should educate their daughters,” she added.
MCE Director Dr. S. Pradeep, MCE Committee Secretary C.R. Jagadish, Treasurer Parshwanath, Deans Dr. K.R. Dushyant Kumar and Dr. Nandita B.R, Head of Electronics and Communications, Dr. P.C. Srikanth, Head of Computer Science, Dr. Chandrikaje, college staff and students were present.
