

Hassan: District Collector C. Sathyabhama has called upon the government departments to work hand in hand with organizations to help the illiterate acquire alphabetic proficiency and to increase the literacy rate in the district. While participating in a flag hoisting programme organized by the district administration on International Literacy Day at the Public Relations Department premises on Wednesday, she said the literacy rate in the district was 80 percent as of now.
“Where there is Akshara, there is awareness and understanding. Akshara Jnana symbolizes courage, determination, commitment and honesty. We must adopt such values and get rid of superstitions and stereotypes,” she added. Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer BR Purnima said that the Literacy Movement was started in 1978-79 and that work was under way to ensure increase in literacy among the people.
“As many as 30,000 people in the district have become literate this year. As many as 223 members of the elected Gram Panchayats have been given opportunities to acquire literacy,” she added. “A movement has been launched to make everyone literate in India. In this regard, I hope every citizen will learn the alphabet and be equipped to lead an informed life,” she said.
On the occasion, Public Education Department Deputy Director Pandu, News and Public Relations Director Meenakshamma, District Literacy Officer Kantaraj, Education Officer Manjula, Field Employees Union District President E. Krishna Gowda and artists Garanti Ramanna, B.T.Manava, S.S. Pasha and Shabbir Ahmed were present.
