The Nice women’s team from Bangalore has secured the first position in the women’s cricket tournament organized by Times Sports Academy, while the Kohinoor women’s team from Bijapur district has secured the second position, said Times Sports Academy head B.K. Gangadhar.

The district’s first women’s cricket tournament, Times Cup, held at the city’s Government Science College and HKS Sports Ground over the past five days, distributed prizes to the winning teams.

Gangadhar said that women were achieving in all fields nowadays and should participate more than men in the field of sports.

“Cricket has gained more popularity in our country these days, and women’s cricket has been attracting more people in recent times. In this regard, this tournament was organized for the first time on a large scale to encourage young talent in our district. A total of eight teams from different districts of the state participated in this tournament, including Shivamogga, Bijapur, Brahmavar of Udupi district, Hassan, Mysore and two teams from Bangalore district. More than 120 athletes participated in this tournament,” he said.

He also affirmed that accommodation and other facilities were provided to all athletes and the parents who arrived for this five-day tournament, making it a serious and sincere endeavour.

Gangadhar also said there was a need to give more encouragement to sports in Hassan district, for which a new Times Sports Academy had been started in front of Times School in Vijayanagara area of the city.

On that premises, training for various sports events was now being provided.
“Many people in Hassan district have already achieved success in the field of sports. Along with them, there is a need for more people to achieve success in sports in the coming days. It is not wrong for parents to make their children more interested in studies, but along with that, it is equally imperative to make them participate in sports as well,” he said.
“Athlete-Speak”
Harshita Shekhar, a cricketer from the Kohinoor Cricket Academy, Bijapur district, told HT: “The number of people encouraging girls in the field of sports needs to increase. Cooperation is essential for every sport to flourish. Even today, we do not have the cooperation that is available for men’s cricket. This needs to change. First, we should support sports from our homes. If not properly encouraged, many people from rural areas and athletes will not be able to achieve their best potential. This sports event organized by Times Academy for women is neat and will be helpful for young women players.
Kanvi, an athlete from the Nice Women’s Team, Bangalore, said: “The cricket tournament organized by Times Sports Academy is very neat and the selection of a good quality ground is helpful for players. Organizing such an event will be helpful for us in the future, and it would be better if more women’s cricket tournaments were held going forward.”
